The jury’s decicion

For the 28th time, Skipsrevyen presents the Ship of the Year award. This year’s winner is a vessel that not only contributes to greener operations in its own right, but also plays an active role in the global green transition.

Prysmian Monna Lisa is an advancement of its sister ship, Prysmian Leonardo da Vinci, which was delivered by Vard Brattvaag in 2021.

As the owners themselves describe it: “From a genius to a masterpiece.”

Measuring 171 metres in length and 34 metres in width, the vessel is equipped with two rotating cable carousels of 10,000 and 7,000 tonnes respectively – among the largest on the market. For maximum precision and safety, it also features an advanced DP3 system.

The vessel is capable of laying subsea cables at depths of up to 3,000 metres.

The hull was constructed at VARD’s yard in Tulcea, Romania, and the delivery schedule has been exceptionally fast. Whether this is a world record for a vessel of this size remains uncertain – but it cannot be far off.

The shipowner, Prysmian, has also placed great emphasis on crew comfort, investing significant effort into the onboard accommodation and interior design.

The ship can also perform three operations in one: trenching the seabed, laying the cable, and re-burying it. This reduces the need for multiple vessels and significantly lowers the overall CO₂ footprint of the operation.

In addition, the vessel is equipped with a 3 MWh battery system – twice the capacity of its sister ship. It features a high-voltage shore connection for zero-emission operations during loading, SCR technology for NOx reduction, and its engines are prepared for biodiesel use.

Taken together, these features result in a substantial reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Prysmian Monna Lisa represents a major investment by the Prysmian Group to meet the growing demand for reliable and efficient subsea power connections, particularly in support of the global transition to renewable energy. The vessel combines advanced technology with sustainable solutions and is designed to operate in demanding conditions with high precision and minimal environmental impact.

We congratulate Prysmian, Vard Søviknes and Vard Design on being awarded Ship of the Year 2025.
